East Devon Radio have launched a new nostalgia station DevonAir Gold.
28 years later DevonAir Gold, a spin off from the classic radio station DevonAir, live in the 80s and 90s, will launch once more on the new small scale DAB+ digital radio service in Exeter at 1pm on Saturday December 31.
DevonAiR Gold is the brainchild of Andy Green who runs East Devon Radio, based in Exmouth.
Station Manager Andy Green said: “We have already launched East Devon Radio on the Exeter DAB+ digital radio service and are taking the opportunity to bring a second station on air.
"The team has been working on the DevonAiR Gold project for some time and are excited to be able to bring back such a popular and much-loved name.
We are not re-creating the original DevonAir, but giving it a new and exciting look for 2023”.
DevonAir was a highly successful commercial radio station across Exeter, East and South Devon, but lost its licence to Gemini FM and closed in 1994. The station made history, the first in the world to open two studios, one in Exeter and the other in Torquay.
New DevonAir presenter and Devon radio legend Chris Dinnis said: "'Before I became a professional radio presenter my first radio work was on Devonair as a weekly guest with Tim Arnold. Further down the line I got to host a daily show there, I was beyond sad when the station ended. How exciting now that the name is revived & I get to present alongside old Devonair voices Ben Clark, Selina Ross & Stephen Ayres. Im beyond excited about my new Saturday morning show. I haven't been on air in Exeter for around 3 years so it's amazing to be back broadcasting to the area I entertained for well over 30 years. As for Devonair Gold, it'll be familiar voices playing the music you grew up with. What could be better.... I think you are going to love it."
The new DevonAiR Gold station will focus on music from the 70s, 80s and 90s, plus local news and events for Exeter and East Devon and there are future plans to expand into Torbay. Former DevonAir presenters joining the new station include Stephen Ayres and Chris Dinnis.
DevonAiR Gold can be heard on any DAB+ digital radio in Exeter and the surrounding area, as well as on the East Devon Radio app.
