Exmouth Museum has received a £500 donation towards a project to digitise a collection of old cine film.
The film depicts local events during the 1940s and 1950s including a veteran car rally, carnivals, folk dances, trawler racing, various weddings and a visit by the Duchess of Kent.
The footage will give the museum staff important information about Exmouth’s social history, and the public will also be able to view it when it’s digitised.
The cine films were made by Raymond Hill, who was born in Leicestershire in 1912 and came to Exmouth with his wife in 1948. He set up what was to become a successful camera shop and ophthalmic opticians in the High Street. He was also a founder member of Exmouth Camera Club and the chairman and treasurer of the Cine Group.
The films have been donated to the museum by one of his two daughters, Veronica Worrall.
The £500 donation has come from the Tesco Community Grant Scheme, in which shoppers vote for the local cause they would like to support with blue tokens given out at the checkouts.
Mike Menhenitt from Exmouth Museum said: “We would like to thank Lisa O’Shaughnessy, the local Tesco Community Champion, and all the supporters who placed their blue tokens into the museum bin while shopping at Tesco. This money will be of great benefit to the museum in the latest project of bringing old Exmouth back to life.”
