This year, Exmouth's Girlguiding group are supported several Remembrance Day events in Exmouth.

They have helped create a remembrance day window in the window of F Arthur Jones in the town. They have supported Exmouth museums Armed Forces day, Exmouth’s Britain in Bloom colouring competition - the winning entry was won by a Brownie, helped to plant summer bedding at Exmouth train station, sent items to Exmouth Food Bank and raised money for Cancer Research.

Sue Blower a leader in Girlguiding said “Our Guiding promise asks each member to do their best and serve their community. In our unit meetings the girls are encouraged be active citizens of the community and the wider world. To think about others and to help each other through challenging activities to keep on going and to have as much fun as possible.

"We would like to thank F. Arthur Jones for allowing us to put up a display about Remembrance this year. We will remember them."

The girl guides have a long history of supporting the armed forces, during WW1 they supported the war effort by collecting newspapers, rolling bandages, raising money for a soldier’s comfort hut in France. But did you know that Guides (and Leaders) acted as messengers for M15 and even couriered messages between the countries negotiating the treaty of Versailles, which officially ended the war.

In WW2 Girlguiding supported their local communities by running soup kitchens after bombing raids, caring for evacuees and in 1942 when the RAF desperately needed 15,000 cotton reels for a secret job, they asked the Guides if they could help and within a week, they had 42,000. Many years later it was discovered that they were used to send secret messages to soldiers on the front lines and had microfilm, maps and German currency contained within them.

Girlguiding is the leading charity for girls and young women in the UK. We help all girls know they can do anything by building their confidence and raising their aspirations. We give them the chance to discover their full potential and encourage them to be a powerful force for good. We give them a space to have fun.
