Budleigh Salterton’s senior cricket players are offering drivers the chance to park up and enjoy a hot drink and cake while volunteers wash their car for them!
The car wash is being run from 9am until 12 noon on Saturday morning (March 23) to raise money for the cricket club's nets appeal – it needs to install vital fixed training nets at its new home The Holt, on East Budleigh Road. These nets are a basic requirement for clubs for training for senior, junior and disability cricket.
The car wash is also part of the English Cricket Board’s Get Set weekend, organised to get communities to come along to their local clubs as members and volunteers ‘get set’ for the upcoming season.
Players will charge £5 (cash or card) to clean cars and £10 for vans. For £5 extra, drivers can get tea or coffee and cake made and served by volunteers in the clubhouse.
Player James England said: “We are trying out all kinds of fundraising ideas to get the money for the new nets, which unfortunately will cost around £40k. A few weeks ago we abseiled on Dartmoor - now for something different! We hope to welcome lots of drivers, and their passengers and families, to the club on Saturday morning – a chance for them to relax while we take the strain of getting their cars clean and shiny.”
As part of the Get Set weekend, volunteers from the club will tidy up the ground and carry out maintenance jobs on Sunday afternoon from 2pm until 4pm in preparation for the start of the cricket season in mid April. Andy’s Bar will be open for refreshments and anyone interested in getting involved in the club is welcome to come up, meet the members and find out more.
