Pupils from Brixington Primary Academy in Exmouth visited East Budleigh last month to learn about Sir Walter Raleigh and get a taste of the village's history.
Three classes toured the village, supervised by teacher Sarah Gerry, and then visited All Saint's Church where they were met by Michael Downes in character as Sir Walter himself.
Sarah said: "We had a lovely day in East Budleigh despite the rain. The children were so surprised to find the 'real' Sir Walter Raleigh to be sleeping in All Saints Church, expertly role-played by Michael Downes, and thoroughly enjoyed all the facts and information he gave them about his life.
"We explored the churchyard, visited Vicars Mead (the school Sir Walter Raleigh went to) and visited his monument. The children found it quite remarkable that they were walking in the very footsteps Sir Walter Raleigh would've done!"
