The ladies from East Devon Golf Club have made a great start in the Annodata Golf Classic, which is believed to be the only National Golf Club Team event left in the UK, open to clubs throughout England, Wales and Scotland.
Competing clubs can put forward two male teams of five players and two ladies’ teams of five players for this match-play knockout format.
The winners of this prestigious competition are crowned the UK Golf Club Champions.
Regional qualifying rounds will take place until October with the winners of each regional final being invited to the Grand Final at Montecastillo Golf Resort in Jerez, Spain later in the year.
Chosen by Sue Burley, our Annodata team captain, our first match was played at Woodbury Park against their Ladies’ team, with Sue Harrison, Nina Hawkins, Ali Miller, Sue Loynes and Helen Chivers representing East Devon.
With both teams playing in good spirit, it was an excellent result for the East Devon ladies, finishing with three wins and two matches halved, which will see the team through to the second round.
DCVLGA Inter-Club Knockout first round
An annual County competition, 24 ladies’ pairs from clubs around the county are taking part in this 2021 knockout.
East Devon ladies’ first match (format four-ball better-ball) was against Yelverton Golf Club, played at Torquay Golf Club for neutrality. Jane Atkin and Sue Harrison represented East Devon, playing against Mair Preston Jones and Diane Reardon from Yelverton.
The weather presented huge challenges for the players, with extremely cold and blustery conditions and, at the top of the Torquay course, 50mph winds made it hard to keep standing and swing a club. Very tight play from the two pairs resulted in neither pair being more than two holes ahead at any time but Jane and Sue kept an advantage, winning two up on the 17th.
The match was played in great spirit by all four and East Devon ladies go through to the second round with a match against Honiton.
