A beautiful summer for East Devon Golf Club started with an away day at Yelverton, organised by Lady Captain, Barbara Middleditch.
This was followed by a number of Devon Golf events, including Womens Medal Finals Division 2, where Jean Quinn for East Devon came in third place with a nett 82 at Downes Crediton.
For the East Devon GC Ladies Championship, played over 36 holes, 17 brave ladies went out on a hot June day to play 7 - 8 hours of golf. The Ladies Champion for 2022 is Sally Underwood, who returned the best gross score (no handicap reduction) and Leslie Dawson came in with the leading nett score (after handicap reduction). The Junior Champion was Gudrun Nolan and we hope she will go on to contest next year's Ladies Championship.
In early August, Barbara arranged for a fun day on the course for all the lady members. Her aim for this was to make it a day of sparkle and glitter, players and equipment decked out in some bright additions.
We had various fun categories, including Best Glitter costume, team and individual, nearest the line (oops - wine) on the 1st and 2nd holes, nearest the pin for Div.1 and Div.2 on the 2nd and 18th holes, as well as the best team.
Once everyone was back in the clubhouse enjoying some shade, cool drinks and eats, we paused the chatter for presentation made to the players who had won the various fun categories as well as the three winning teams, the winning team for the golf being Nina Hawkins, Maureen Reynolds, Alison Corney, Elaine Curel.
Also in August, playing at Honiton, the winner of the Venerable Vets Championship and the Lloyd Williams Cup was Lesley Wilson with a fabulous 46 points. Pippa Norman was runner up of the Very Venerable Vets championship.
Division 2 placings saw Deirdre Mackness in first place with 40 points and Peggy Loman came in a very creditable 8th with 36 points. In Division 3, Barbara Bartlett came in 5th place with 36 points. Devon Golf always attracts a big field of competitors, so well done everyone.
Interclub competitions are a key part of most golf club competitions and the highlights - friendlies apart - are three Cups, each with its own handicap level for players.
The Still Cup is played on a 'scratch' basis, meaning that all ladies play with no handicap allowance, simply the first of the two players to hole their ball winning that hole. The Presidents Cup is played by ladies with a handicap index up to 21.4, then the Sheelah Creasy Cup is for ladies with an index between 21.5 and 40.4.
The Sheelah Creasy team won through to the quarter finals, which were played on (another) sunny day at Staddon Heights. The match, fought to the 18th green, was so close but sadly for us, our ladies lost out to Ilfracombe.
Due to the large Ladies Section, we are able to field two Presidents teams. The Presidents 1 have made it through to the Quarters (Dainton Park) and Semis (Tavistock 1) and now play Okehampton Ladies in the Final.
Our Still Cup team are also through to the finals, having won their semi-final against Saunton. They will be playing Torquay Ladies.
With these two finals matches to be played at Churston Golf Club on September 30, there is mounting excitement amongst the Ladies Section and our great hopes that we can bring home the trophies.
