Two years after she won the national mountain bike title, Cathy Kilburn of the Mid-Devon CC stormed through the Lake District mud to lift the UK Cyclo-Cross Ladies Over-55 Championship at the Westmorland Showground.
Kilburn, known affectionately to friends and rivals alike as 'Killer', has been a hardy perennial on the country's off-road scene for many years, travelling thousands of miles each winter to battle through gruelling conditions and nearly always finishing on the podium of veteran events.
The course at Milnthorpe included a small lake which had to be waded through, a bridge, tricky banks and lots of mud, but Cathy from Exeter coped with them all to finish fourth overall in the Over-50 race and the first Over-55 rider.
Her Mid-Devon teammate Jackie Shute was a gutsy fifth.
A top-three place was just beyond former world and current European Masters champion Robin Delve from Longdown, near Exeter. Delve finished fifth.
