Withycombe suffered a 7-24 at home to Torquay Athletic on a day when poor discipline punished the hosts.
Withy made a perfect start, as an early scrum penalty led to the ball being worked into the centre and a perfectly-weighted chip from Jason Luff found space behind the tryline, allowing Callum Tose to ground the ball and score. Harry Symons’ conversion topped up the points.
Straight from the restart, Torquay benefitted from a free-kick at the scrum to spin the ball wide to score in the corner. Despite putting on more pressure in the visiting 22’, the ball was lost and with the clearing kick unable to be controlled, two kicks from Torquay saw the ball back under the posts for their second try, this one converted.
Two further penalties extended the Torquay lead before half-time and they repeated the trick after the break for a 24-7 advantage. The Withies enjoyed played of territory but were unable to add further points.
