A little Spring in the air, it was Ladies Day at the Imperial Ground. Entertainment was on the cards and the Cockles delivered their hand in the second half.
Visitors Okehampton have been on a run of unbeaten games and fancied their chances at Exmouth in this League and Devon Senior Cup double header.
It was clear to see why the Okes have done well, strong out of the blocks, they continued their assault throughout the half, going in to the break 3-12 up.
George Meadows struck an early penalty to give the Cockles the lead on 13 minutes. Ten minutes later, Tom White crossed the line, then Kieran Lee on 46 minutes, with the conversion. A long half with both sides testing defence, whilst trying to find gaps to exploit. Exmouth also went down to 14 men with a yellow card.
After the break, the traffic was pretty much one way, heading towards Cockles Corner. Tries from Dave Bargent, Jake Inglis, Matt Ryan and Robbie Weeks, with conversions from George Meadows (2) and Sam Whitehead (2) completed the Exmouth scoring. Punctuated with a solitary try for Tom White, the final score was 31-17.
The pack set down a strong foundation at scrum time, lineouts did well to keep the ball flowing. The defensive set when Okey attacked got going was snubbed out with physical tackling.
Regional 1 South West League completed, Exmouth finished in the top five. A well-deserved final flourish for all players that came through the squad with coaching team, medical team and game day support, during a challenging season.
After much deliberation, Ladies Day Man of the Match went to Matt Ryan, presented by long-time member Hilary Coombes. Jake Inglis got the plaudits for his Mother’s Day message.
The rugby continues on Saturday, March 25 with a trip to Newton Abbot in a Devon Senior Cup pool game. Then at home to Devonport Services on Saturday, April 1 in the same competition. Following the conclusion of those fixtures, Exmouth will know more about progress to next round.
