Exmouth RFC turned their attention to Devon RFU Senior Cup action with a comfortable 68-14 victory at Newton Abbot.

The All Whites were a regular fixture a few seasons ago, now separated by league difference. Exmouth included a number of youngsters in their match-day squad and all slipped into the game-plan with the Cockles running in 10 tries.

After 90 seconds, the writing was on the wall when James Clarke scored a strong running effort, tries then followed for Dave Bargent, Gareth Walker, Lewis Geran and Robbie Weeks, with four conversions from Sam Whitehead. Corey Wayne crossed for the hosts, converted by Jack Sweeney, 7-33 at half-time.

The second half started with a bang, as Ben Hawley raced over from an offload from Will Ridout. Dave Bargent then scored two more tries, his hat-trick, with one each for Matt Ryan and Nick Headley. Sam Whitehead slotted five conversions. Taylor Cross and Jay Barnes added seven points for Newton Abbot.

For the travelling faithful, including CLOGS (Cockles League of Old Gentlemen Supporters), this was an entertaining and powerful run-out from the squad. Some of the CLOGS, as former age-grade coaches, got the opportunity to watch their young guns who have progressed to senior club rugby. A fabulous afternoon had by all. Exmouth have more Devon Cup action this week, at home to Devonport Services. Following this game, rankings will be set, with semi-finals scheduled to be played on Saturday, April 15 and the Cup Final towards the end of April. Exmouth Quins are also at home on Saturday, a replay League game against Torquay Athletic 1st Team.

Congratulations to Exmouth duo Georgia Kew and Alberta Sprague, who helped Devon U18s to a 22-15 victory over Cornwall on Sunday. Played at Okehampton, this was the final game in this season’s county championship. The girls have been playing in partnership with Exeter Saracens Girls, a number who featured on Sunday. A credit to both clubs.
