A week of contrasting fortunes for Exmouth Town has seen them slip to their heaviest home defeat since February 2018 and then rebound in style with a comprehensive first league victory of the season, writes John Dibsdall.
Last Wednesday there was little between the sides until the visitors, Bemerton Heath Harlequins, opened the scoring on the stroke of half time. The second half saw Town soundly beaten having conceded a forty yard screamer, a disputed penalty and a well worked fourth goal with only a shot from Aarron Denny that cannoned off the crossbar to show for their efforts
Town travelled to Bishops Cleeve with manager, Kevin Hill, looking for a response and his team reacted in style with a 4-1 victory.
Mike Landricombe opened the scoring on 30 minutes with his first competitive goal for the club, heading home an Ethan Slater cross. Ben Steer doubled the lead from the penalty spot on 43 minutes after Denny had been brought down.
Town started the second half again on the front foot and after a Denny shot on 53 minutes had brought an excellent save, Slater was on hand to ram home the rebound.
Two minutes later and more excellent play between Denny and Steer saw the latter cross for Ace High to convert. Last season, Town let a two-goal lead slip with goals conceded in added time but, despite the hosts pulling a goal back with a superb free kick, Town comfortably held on for their first away league victory since last November.
This result has taken us off the bottom of the league where five of our seven games have been against sides currently in the top six places.
October will be a big month for Town that could define our season with three games at home, starting this Saturday when Tavistock are the visitors, kick off 3.00pm.
Our Devon rival has also endured a disappointing start to the season but have picked up four points from their last two games. Whilst Town have struggled in the league on their travels to Tavistock over recent seasons, they will be looking to build on their 2-0 away victory this season in the St. Lukes Bowl and add to their five consecutive home victories over the Lambs since 2017.
