A slightly bizarre goal in the final few minutes earned Budleigh Salterton all three points at Ipplepen Athletic in Devon Football League, writes Alan Beer.
Despite the relentless rain, the pitch at Ipplepen held up very well and only became particularly cut-up in the closing stages, which was a credit to the hard work of the home groundstaff.
In a lively opening, the hosts came close with a cross that bounced off the Budleigh bar. The Robins responded with an incisive run down the right flank from Jake Chudley, who then cut inside for a shot charged down by the Ipplepen defence.
Early in the second half, Oscar Walsh crossed for Jack Hocking to shoot narrowly wide and the game was minutes away from a draw when Budleigh won a free-kick on the edge of the box. Walsh thundered a strike against the bar and the ball hit the Ipplepen’s goalkeeper’s back before nestling into the net.
