Budleigh Salterton FC's hopes of capturing their first trophy of the season were dashed by Newton Abbot.
In the Devon County FA Graddon Vending Women Senior Cup final, they were beaten 1-2 in very rainy, windy and cold conditions.
The drama for the Budleigh Robinettes began way before the kick-off.
Their only recognised goalkeeper, Ashley Jade Brown, became unavailable, midfielder Tahla Williams agreed to take over the duties, but got injured in the warm up.
While striker Becky Long stepped up to the task, and gave a brave and fine performance.
In the first 35 minutes, Budleigh were in control with Maisie Smith giving them a deserved 11th minute lead.
They then restricted Fremington to few shots until the 37th minute when Amy Slaney struck from her left into the opposite corner, with the teams going in at 1-1 at half time.
Over the next 45 minutes, Fremington had the larger percentage of attacking play with a breakthrough coming their way in the 49th minute through substitute Beth Evans.
Try as they may., the Robinettes could not find that finishing edge to take the tie into a penalty shootout.
One consolation for Budleigh is that Kirsty Brown, who was originally down to be on the substitute bench, found herself in the starting line-up, to be named Devon County FA 'Player of the Match'.
According to the remaining scheduled fixture list, they have eleven league matches remaining starting with an away trip to Teignmouth on Sunday, April 7, followed by five consecutive games at home, and four aways on the trot.
