Newly formed Exmouth Town U12 girls secured a point in their first ever competitive league match this weekend.
The new team, made up by mostly year 6 schoolgirls, faced tough opposition in West Exe Wolverines whose numbers were made up mainly of girls in comprehensive year 7.
West Exe had also already played their first league game the week earlier winning 8-1.
The age gap and size difference didn’t put Exmouth off though and they quickly settled into the game, proving their fitness and determination.
Exmouth took a first half lead with a great strike fired into the corner by Tabitha Brown which came after fantastic link up play between her and the always energetic Amelia Thompson.
Half time saw plenty of changes and meant all 16 girls had a fair amount of playing time.
These fresh legs quickly paid dividends for Exmouth as Amelia Kite broke through the West Exe defence only to be taken out inside the box giving the referee no choice but to blow his whistle.
Up stepped Liberty Moore for the resulting penalty, and she powered the ball into the top corner.
At 2-0 up Town didn’t take their foot off the pedal and created multiple chances, but West Exe did start to use their size as an advantage, and this was clear to see when Exmouth conceded a penalty themselves.
The spot kick was cooly slotted away to make it 2-1 and a fantastic run by the West Exe forward then saw the scoreline levelled at 2-2.
With five minutes remaining Town thought they would be walking away with all three points.
A superb through ball from Liberty Moore was latched onto by Tabitha Brown, and after proving her own strength she rifled her shot low into the bottom corner of the net for her second to take a 3-2 lead.
Town defended with all they had to take all three points, unfortunately though West Exe managed to get a last-minute equaliser.
One more chance came Town’s way, Amelia Thompson taking on what seemed like the whole West Exe team, but she was unlucky to see her shot narrowly miss the top corner.
The final whistle blew with the two teams sharing points, but it was an amazing first outing for the girls in Blue.
